Los vocablos náhuatl Chichic, cosa amarga y Tlán, junto o cerca; que unidos significan “Cerca de la cosa amarga”; llamado así por los campos cercanos sembrados de palmeras de dátil, que segregan una salina amarga porque sus componentes químicos son cloruro de sodio y sulfato de magnesio. Hoy ya no existen estos campos sembrados con palmeras.
El municipio de Chietla se localiza en la parte suroeste del Estado de Puebla. Sus coordenadas geográficas son los paralelos 18º 26' 00'' 18º 36' 00'', de latitud norte y los meridianos 98º 31' 24'' y 98º 42' 36'' de longitud occidental. Sus colindancias son: al Norte con el municipio de Tepexco, al Sur colinda con el municipio de Chiautla de Tapia, al Oeste colinda con los municipios de Tilapa, Atzala e Izúcar de Matamoros, y al Poniente colinda con el Estado de Morelos.
De acuerdo al Conteo de Población y Vivienda 2010, este municipio tiene una población total de 33,935, siendo 16,288 hombres y 17,647 mujeres.

El municipio de Chietla es uno de los 217 municipios en que se encuentra dividido el estado mexicano de Puebla. Situado en su zona suroeste, su cabecera es la población de Chietla.
El municipio de Chietla se encuentra localizado en el suroeste del estado, forma parte de la región del Valle de Atlixco y Matamoros. Tiene una extensión territorial total de 326.53 que equivalen al 0.95 % del territorio total del estado.
Sus coordenadas geográficas extremas son 18°24′ - 18°37′ de latitud norte y 98°31′ - 98°43′ de longitud oeste, su altitud va de 960 a 2 000 metros sobre el nivel del mar.
Limita al norte con el municipio de Tepexco, al noreste con el municipio de Tilapa, al este con el municipio de Izúcar de Matamoros y el municipio de Atzala y al sur con el municipio de Chiautla. Al oeste sus límites corresponden al estado de Morelos, en particular con el municipio de Axochiapan.
